What happens before I apply epoxy to your floor
I evaluate the slab, grind the surface, repair cracks, and apply primer before the epoxy base coat.
I’m Phil Smith, owner and installer at Coastal Carolina Coatings LLC. Before I apply epoxy, I evaluate the concrete that will support the coating. During an on-site estimate, I measure the space, inspect the slab, and test for moisture issues. I also identify repairs and preparation needs, discuss color and finish options, and provide a written quote. The finish you see comes after this work. Proper preparation lets the epoxy bond to sound concrete instead of sitting on old coatings, oil, or weak surface material.
Grinding exposes and profiles the concrete
Grinding opens the concrete pores and gives the surface the profile needed for adhesion. If the slab has paint, sealer, or old epoxy, those layers must be fully removed to expose bare concrete. Existing coatings prevent the new epoxy from bonding correctly. Oils and other contaminants also need removal. After mechanical preparation, I clean away dust and residue. This work addresses what is on the surface as well as the surface itself. The new system needs direct contact with properly prepared concrete for its bond.
Cracks need attention before the finish
I repair cracks and joints as part of preparation before the primer and base coat. Flake can help hide minor surface imperfections because its textured, multicolor pattern makes them less visible. Larger cracks still require repair before coating. A decorative finish does not take the place of that step. The evaluation also looks at the condition of the existing slab. Refinishing works when concrete is structurally sound but worn or stained; major structural failure or deep foundation issues require replacement rather than surface refinishing.
Moisture testing and primer come before coating
Coastal humidity makes moisture testing part of preparation in Goose Creek and the surrounding Lowcountry. Moisture vapor can interfere with adhesion, and coastal properties often need vapor barrier primers because of ground moisture. After assessment, grinding, and repairs, I apply the primer, followed by the base coat and protective finish coat. Metallic systems use a primed surface before their decorative layers, while flake systems receive chips in the wet base coat before clear sealing. I handle the evaluation, preparation, and installation myself, without subcontractors or rotating crews.
